Public Design Support

Launch of the Public Design Support with Hellersdorf residents in 2018 (in German) with Studio Experimentelles Design, HFBK Hamburg, Jesko Fezer and students

»Public Design Support« is a working hypothesis for design. It is based on the assumption that designers can make a significant contribution to questions of everyday life, that design education should include engagement with real problems and that design is best done in cooperation with those directly affected. With their project Public Design Support, students from the University of Fine Arts of Hamburg (HFBK) offer free practical help for acting autonomously. They work with residents on (design)problems of any kind and encourage the development of alternative understandings of urbanity through design processes. Because design can be more than a way for competing cities to distinguish themselves, more than an individual status symbol and more than a tool that causes urban segregations. Public Design Support is an engaged and political form of design, turning people, problems and spaces into actors and objects in the design process.

In April 2018 the group will offer residents and local initiatives Public Design Support in Hellersdorf’s Quartier Boulevard Kastanienallee. The Studio will seek to discuss the neighbourhood’s individual and/or common design issues and needs and work on them productively.
